How to Raise a Responsible Driver

Nov 19, 2015

When your teenager receives a driver's license, it's both fun and scary -- fun for them, scary for you. Along with that license comes a lot of responsibility and potentially higher insurance rates.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Americans 15 to 24 years old. This statistic underscores both teens' lack of experience and also their high rate of drinking and driving. Although it is your child that is behind the wheel, there are a few general things you can do to combat your teen's lack of driving experience -- while still allowing them to enjoy their newfound freedom.

The right vehicle

Whether or not you're buying your teen's vehicle, you should try to encourage a less flashy model. Not only do conventional models cost less to insure, but they are also less likely to invite speeding or other unsafe behavior.

Who pays the insurance?

Give your teen the responsibility for paying for part, if not all, of his or her auto insurance. Those teens who do so are more likely to drive better in order to maintain low rates.

Extra incentives

A clean driving record is key to low insurance rates, so teens need your encouragement to help them strive for this.

Good grades

Maintaining a "B" or better grade average can reduce rates substantanially for young drivers. And even some not so young, as the discount can apply to full time college students, too.

Extra precautions

Prom and graduation time are prime accident seasons, mostly because they often involve alcohol consumption. Since half of youth auto accidents are related to alcohol or drugs, you may want to arrange for supervised transportation on these occasions.

The freedom that comes with a driver's license can be overwhelming for both child and parent. And while freedom is part of adulthood, so is responsibility. Responsible driving will not only save you money with lower insurance rates, it may also save your child's life.
